The Luminous Sunflower
Our Story
The Sunflower That Grew in Darkness
Hi, I'm Krystle, also known as Luminous.
I'm the founder of The Luminous Sunflower Wellness Apothecary, a Certified Master Herbalist, an alchemist, and the daughter of a woman who taught me that everything beautiful begins with a seed.
My mother, JoAnn, famously known as “Mama Jo” was an herbalist, a gardener, and one of my greatest teachers.
She came from Elton, Louisiana, where she grew up helping work the land and learning about herbs and gardening from her grandmother, a traiteur — a traditional Louisiana Creole healer whose gift was said to be one she was born with.
She later owned a farm, cultivated her own garden, and spent twelve years managing the garden center of a major home improvement store.
But some of the most important lessons my mama taught me weren't about plants. They were about life.
She taught me how to be a gardener in life, in love, and in harvest.
I remember walking through her garden one day. She showed me her roses, her crepe myrtles, and so many other flowers she had planted and nurtured. Then she walked me toward the pasture.
There were two chairs sitting nearby, and beside them stood two sunflowers.
She told me one was for her mama, and the other was for her mama's mama.
Then she said:
"But you know what I like about a sunflower, baby? Look at them stems. Look how tough they are. I've seen rains come through here; them things go side to side and they never break."
She continued:
"When it's time for the winter to come, they go away, and then I forget I planted them, and the next spring they out."
Then she looked at me and said:
"They remind me of you, baby girl. Them things tough. When the sun come out, they shiiiinnnneee so bright! Yella like you!
Mama always did love to watch you walk in a room. You just have this glow, always have, my baby. And no matter the season, Mama's baby always finds her light."
She said it with such pride. I'll never forget those words.
I didn't fully understand what my mama was giving me that day.
Today, I do.
She was teaching me about resilience, about seasons, and about having roots strong enough to withstand the storms.
Even when I couldn't see what was growing, my roots were still there.
The Woman Behind the Sunflower
My story started long before The Luminous Sunflower became a business,
I struggled with obesity beginning in childhood and battled food addiction for much of my life.
At my highest weight, I reached 419 pounds.
,
I know what it feels like to be trapped in your own body, to desperately want change while struggling with something you cannot live without: food.
My transformation came through small, consistent changes.
One day, I was gifted a jar of sea moss gel.
I incorporated it into my morning and evening routine. I started walking, changing how I nourished myself, and learning to be intentional about my daily habits.
That one jar sparked my curiosity. I experimented with flavors, explored botanicals, and eventually turned a simple gift into a collection of sea moss gels and botanical products.
Through consistency, movement, and building a routine I could maintain, I lost more than 190 pounds. I've continued working to maintain that progress.
Sea moss didn't do that for me. Showing up every day did. The jar was the spark.
I was also learning how to love myself, relearn myself, and reparent myself.
I started understanding the little girl who had struggled with her weight for so long. I learned to give myself patience instead of punishment and to recognize that lasting change takes time.
Then I lost my mama.
Grief brought some of my old struggles back to the surface. There were days I wanted to find comfort in food again, days when all I wanted was something familiar to make the hurt feel smaller.
I had to remind myself of everything I'd learned. Some days, that meant simply getting up, taking a walk, or making one better choice.
And I kept thinking about those sunflowers.
The ones Mama said could bend from side to side in the rain without breaking. The ones that disappeared in winter but returned in spring.
I came to understand that I could experience my darkest days and still find my way toward the light.
That is what The Sunflower That Grew in Darkness means to me.
The Alchemist & The Blueprint
The alchemist starts with herself.
Everything I've cultivated through The Luminous Sunflower began with something I had to work through, learn, or transform within myself.
I am the prototype. I am the blueprint.
I've learned how much a supportive community matters when you're trying to change your life, and that's why I created The Luminous Sunflower Wellness Apothecary.
What started with one gifted jar has grown into handcrafted sea moss gels, botanical capsules, and a vision for something bigger.
I make what I use. I share what I've learned.
I'm building a community where we can walk together, meditate, talk openly about our struggles, and hold each other accountable. A place where showing up for yourself matters, even when all you can manage is one small step.
I know how hard those first steps can be. I've had to take them myself, more than once.
My Roots. My Harvest. My Light.
Years after that afternoon in the garden, while she was still with me, I told my mother I had named my company
The Luminous Sunflower because of what she taught me.
She said:
"That's my baby."
Those words mean more to me today than I can explain.
If you look closely at my photograph, you'll see a woman dressed in white, right over my shoulder.
That's Jo.
My mama. My ancestor. My guardian angel.
I wanted her there because she's part of everything I'm building. I still carry her lessons.
My mama used to say:
"You can tell somebody by their fruit."
And I hope that when you look at my life, my work, and the love I pour into what I create, you see good fruit and know where it came from.
Jo was my root. And I am part of her harvest.
I'm still learning how to be a gardener in my own life. I think about those two sunflowers by the pasture, and every time I find the strength to keep growing, I understand her a little more.
I am the sunflower that grew in darkness.
I'm still growing toward the light. And I want to share what helped me get here, in case it helps you beam bright.
With love,
